On this half day field trip, we will visit recently installed instruments to monitor active seismicity and discern the source of the Mysterious “Moodus Noises”, walk a transect across the Honey Hill fault and explore ancient fault rocks and their implications for earthquakes. We will meet and end at Gillette Castle State Park in Hadlyme, CT in the scenic lower Connecticut River Valley.

Stops:

  1. Gillette Castle (1/2 hour – introduction to trip and brief investigation of the Hebron Fm.)

  2. East Haddam Historical Society (1 hour?)

  3. Saunders Preserve, East Haddam CT (1.5 hours – 1 mile walk to 5-6 stops)

  4. Cliffs below Gillette Castle (1 hour – ancient earthquakes in the Honey Hill fault zone)
