Details

This trip will provide a relaxed, informal, half-day set of visits to parks in the New Haven area that combine spectacular scenery with interesting geology. We’ll first visit Lighthouse Point Park, with its historic lighthouse, views of New Haven Harbor, and exposures of Neoproterozoic metamorphic bedrock. Next, we’ll visit the summit of East Rock, part of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP), in East Rock Park, for beautiful views of the New Haven skyline and a discussion of CAMP and the glacial processes that shaped the present-day landscape. We’ll end at Hubbard Park in Meriden, CT, where we’ll visit Castle Craig Tower atop East Peak in the Hanging Hills, for spectacular views of Connecticut’s traprock ridges and a discussion of the processes that formed the Hartford rift basin and the Metacomet Ridge.

Please note that Lighthouse Point Park charges parking fees of $20/vehicle for CT plates and $30/vehicle for out…
