Overview:
The purpose of this trip is to explore the origin(s) of veins and dikes in the Narragansett Pier granite and its wall rocks. We ask the question, “Can structures that are well described for veins typically filled with quartz or calcite, help us understand the origins of veins rich in feldspar – commonly referred to as pegmatite and aplite dikes?” The minerals in all these structures crystallized in fractures, leading to the question: “Can understanding fractures, fracture mechanics, and fracture opening rates help us understand the textures and minerals in the veins and dikes between the fracture walls?” On this field trip we propose that the answer to these questions is yes. Short walks/some rough terrain.
